Technology is a vital component of the curriculum at the St. Petersburg Christian School. We have a state-of-the-art computer laboratory which includes keyboarding classes, Internet access (with filtering against inappropriate material), word processing and spreadsheet for the students to use in their research projects. In addition to access to the computer lab, there are networked computers in all of the classrooms, as well.
The Media Center utilizes Athena, a software system by which students may do book searches and check out the books that they select. The library provides several research computers that supply circulation information, Accelerated Reader quizzes, and Internet access for educational research. |
A Student Centered Focus on Technology
We believe that proficiency in computer and technology skills is a key to each young person's future. Students, at all grade levels, are instructed in computer and given the opportunity to develop these skills.
Elementary children receive weekly instruction given in the computer lab, which has 29 Dell systems. Basic skills are taught using strategically selected software, multimedia presentations, and selected Internet sites.
Kindergarten through fifth grade children use networked computers in their classrooms to hone academic skills, build concepts, and develop technology literacy across all subject areas.
Middle School students have computer instruction 80 to 120 minutes per week with an emphasis on word processing, touch-typing, spreadsheet, and database creation. They also learn proper Internet research skills, create PowerPoint multimedia presentations, and design their own websites! These are all skills that will serve them well in high school, college and beyond!

Instructional Focus on Technology
Revolutionary changes in education and instructional strategies have occurred within the last decade, due to computer technology! The SPCS faculty is second to none in their enthusiasm and use of technology to enhance their instructional programs!
Teacher-made Power Point slide shows are used within the- classrooms and on teacher web pages to help children master strategic skills.
The Internet is available in every classroom and is used to bring historic events, scientific studies or current events from around the world to eager learners.
Teacher websites are shared and used to expand the professional resources of our faculty. Report cards for children in Grades I through 8 are now done by computer, while providing the capability for personalized comments by a child's teachers. |
|
 | All classrooms are equipped with cable televisions, VCR'S, and scan converters to transmit what is being done on the computer to be viewed by students. Use of the microscope can also be televised on the classroom screen.

Communication Through Technology
Communication builds understanding and promotes partnership. The use of technology at SPCS has enhanced both. It provides a vital link between every segment of the school family.
Knowing the value of communication and of parent partnership, St. Petersburg Christian School has invested in the Edline web portal, an avenue by which parents may have access to their child's class assignments and grades in any subject, at any time. This service is available through the SPCS website, with security assured for every child through the use of an private access code that is given to the family. Grades on homework assignments, in-class projects and tests are all available to the child's parent, so that support may be given.
Report cards for Grades 1-8 are now being generated by computer. Personalized teacher comments are a part of each report. |
E-mail has surely expanded communication and made it convenient for response. Both internal and external e-mail exchanges enhance interchanges within the school family.
WSPC News Program
WSPC serves the informational needs of the school campus. Students prepare and present a daily news program each morning, which is televised over the school's closed-circuit television system. Crew members learn effective on-camera presentation techniques, operate an array of video production equipment, and develop scripts and dialogue for the benefit of their peers and the entire school family.
